Ethos

Here as Shalom Sport Horses, we breed well rounded, obedient and respectful horses, that will excel in the competition arena for either amateur or professional riders. As you will see particularly in the progeny section we don't do breeding on a large scale, averaging  one or two foals born each season. This makes attention to detail far easier to manage, allowing each horse to process at their own time. We set up each foal to win at life, never pushing beyond their understanding or confidence level. If we ask a young horse to do something, we have to know that it will succeed at it, after all we want a partner that wants to work with/for us, not against us.

Aim

We aim to breed, firstly some young horses that we and other riders get to compete on, that are out proving themselves in the competition arena, while then going on to breed from these proven bloodlines, for others to enjoy in the the success of a well bred, educated and competitive mount for the future.

Dream

Our ultimate dream would be to breed a horse that is competitive on the world stage. Knowing several international riders overseas we would love to produce one through to the required level and send it over to Europe.

Personal Background

Growing up on a dairy farm, in Golden Bay breeding animals of all sorts ran in my blood. Having ridden through the PC system and into Equestrian Federation level in Dressage, Show Jumping and Eventing finding and sourcing horses on a budget became difficult. When you did find something suitable there was always underlying issues, that someone else had created. At the time I couldn't afford to go out and buy a nice 5yr old, but I could put my 1.20m SJ mare in foal and breed my next star. What I discovered was how amazingly rewarding it is to study bloodlines, select a suitable stallion, have patience for the gestation period, see the safe arrival of your dreams becoming a reality, do all the early education on a blank canvas, and while it takes several years to get there the absolute joy of competing your home bred horse in the discipline that you bred it to do. Some people say breeding horses is a fools game, and while it maybe true, the joys certainly outweigh the lows. So as a pure hobby I bred 6 horses in the south island. Three for personal use, and three because I seized the opportunity to! Costa, Ellie, Unnamed (still born), Kavarn, Hugo & Solo you all helped to form the love and desire to step up and take a risk. Having moved to Tauranga in 2012, the idea only grew stronger and Shalom Sport Horses was born. This has also been made reality by teaming up with long time friend, coach and fellow horse breeding enthusiast Debbie Young and her husband Alistair. Debbie is spearheading Water View Equine and many of her horses are also listed within this site. Hence the 'WVE' prefix. The incredible opportunity that I have thanks to Debbie and Alistair to breed and produce sport horses is indescribable.
